Voice of America
WASHINGTON, Sept 29, 2008 — The U.S. House of Representatives has voted against a massive government rescue plan for America’s troubled financial institutions.
Representatives voted 228 to 205 against the $700 billion proposal, despite calls from the president and Congressional leaders to approve the measure, or risk throwing the U.S. into economic turmoil.
The House was considering whether to reconsider the vote.
U.S. stock indexes intially plunged as news of the vote spread.
